Two Cool Websites

Every once in a while when I have idle time I love to surf around the internet. In this time I have discovered many cool and unique websites…but there are two that I am just obsessed with and could literally spend hours on. I just thought I would share them in case anyone out there has similar interests.

1. http://www.airliners.net/

This a way cool site. It is a database of photographs of all sorts of commercial and military aircraft from all over the world. You can search by airport: from Sierra Leone to Sweden; or aircraft: 737, MD-80; or carrier: American, Delta, LOT, SAS, etc.. There are also discussion thread that are filled with aviation buffs who talk about all the insider information in the aviation industry. For some reason I love reading about the new paint job Delta is going to order on its planes…or the new technology to make airline seats thinner to pack even more of us in coach. I highly recommend it.

2. www.flightaware/live

In consulting interviews one of the questions you typically get asked is how many airliners are in the air at any given minute over the continental US. This website gives the answer. It keeps track of every single flight in and out of every airport within the country. You can search by carrier, airport, aircraft type, airline. The site can tell you exactly where every flight is, what route it has taken, current altitude, speed, and actual departure/arrival information. A map is displayed showing the route, etc.

When you first go to the site the first page shows a graphic of the US with little red dots representing every flight in the air at that moment.

It’s a lot of fun to see the different routes the flights will take based upon weather. Certain airlines typically fly right through the bad weather…but others tend to be conservative and fly around it. I’ve noticed this especially on the transcontinental routes. Delta is more likely to fly around bad weather…but American will just fly right through it.

So if you have some time online…and you ever want to get your nerd on….these sites are for you.
