Last weekend was quite the adventure for the both of us. After our classes wrapped up on Thursday we loaded up the car and hit the road for San Francisco. Our goal was to figure out where we should live this summer while I am interning out there and Mandy is taking a few classes.
All I have to say about the drive is it is no wonder the government chose northern Nevada to test nuclear weapons! The drive was long and filled with the most barren landscape I have ever seen. It makes driving through Kansas seem like a thrill ride. We drove Thursday to Reno where we stayed the night and finished the drive on Friday morning. Friday’s drive was much more exciting, the Sierra Nevada mountains were just beautiful as we drove through the Donner Pass and descended down into Sacramento.
We started by looking at some apartments across the bay bridge from town and finally made it into the city at about 4:00 PM on Friday. I thought poor Mandy was going to burst into tears. The city was CRAZY! Fire Engines with sirens blaring, cars honking like crazy, bums everywhere and I mean everywhere! We had hit the town right in the middle of Friday afternoon rush hour.
Our first matter of business was I wanted to see the office building where I would be working this summer. So we headed to the Financial District, and pulled into the parking garage. I think it donned on me that we weren’t in Utah anymore when I saw the rate card for the garage under my future building: $4 for every 15 minutes. We hopped out took a few pictures, and walked around the general area. I am really excited for my job this summer! Our parking bill…$8
Friday night we stayed at a Fairfield Marriott outside of town. The only problem with this is the suburbs of San Francisco have NO RESTAURANTS. Our hotel was next to a Burger King and a fancy steakhouse. Not particularly wanting either we hit the highway, headed south and figured we would find something reasonable to eat. One mile passed, two, and three…nothing…five, six, ten, twelve…nothing. Lots of beautiful homes, and fast food, that was all we could find! Finally it donned on me that we were close to Stanford so we pulled up on our GPS the fastest route to Stanford and we headed that direction. I knew there was no way a college campus would exist without some decent restaurants nearby. Luckily I was right and we found a Cheesecake Factory right outside the main entrance to the campus. Completely exhausted we ate our dinner and then headed back to the hotel.
Saturday we woke up early and visited at least ten different apartment complexes. All of course want to charge us buckos of money because we are only there for three months. I always tell Mandy that living in Heaven on Earth(California) comes at a price(Texans struggle with that a bit). We found a few that we liked that are within walking distance of my summer job. Next month we will nail down exactly which one we will live in.
It was so nice for us to get out of PROVO if only for a weekend. Sunday we made the long 13 hour drive back to school….and Monday we got back to the grind of classes and work. Below are several pictures we took while we were on the adventure. I am sure excited about this summer!
